The city lies within the humid continental climate zone, and experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with average daytime high temperatures of 80 to 85 °F (27 to 29 °C). In a normal summer temperatures exceed 90 °F (32 °C) on 17 days. With nighttime lows of 61 to 66 °F (16 to 19 °C). Winters are cold, snowy, and windy, with some sunny days, and with temperatures (particularly at night) below freezing. Spring and fall are mild seasons with low humidity.

According to the National Weather Service, Chicago's highest official temperature reading of 105 °F (41 °C) was recorded on July 24, 1934. The lowest temperature of −27 °F (−33 °C) was recorded on January 20, 1985. The city can experience extreme winter cold spells that may last for several consecutive days.
